Time to rebuild the whole bike. Reason for that was the bad condition of the paint on my frame. Here you can see the up to date progress of the rebuild. - Kind of blogg report about the work.

April 22, 2007

DONE.

April 15, .2007 - Gentlemen, please start your engines!
The first testride around the block is done! Itīs alive!
You can see from that what Iīve done during the past days. All small stuff to be able to go for a first short ride today. All wnet fine - so far. Now itīs just small stuff to do. Stuff like adjusting the clutch and primary, mounting some covers and smaller parts, sealing the primarycase, building a new licenceplate mount and than - go for a real testride.

April 09, .2007 - The devil is in the details.
Exhapt the mirror-housing all parts came back from the powdercoater. Final spurt. Mounted the shocks, assembled and bleeded the foot-brake and lined up the taillight. Over to the bikeshop on saturday morning to buy the last parts...to notice that the mounted exhaust-gaskets are to thick. I wanted to try some new stuff. The distance between front exhaust pipe and floorboard and itīs mounting was way small before. Now it doesnīt fit at all. The new gasket is 2.4mm thick, the old one was 0.8mm. So the whole pipe comes a little further down and touches the mounting. Great! So I have to wait till tuesday after easter to go to the shop to get another gasket. Certainly you never have something like a fucking exhaust gasket somewhere in the garage when you need it!

April 02, .2007 - Ratchet Top, Öillines, Florrboards, Primary
Iīve finished the work on the Ratchet Top and put it back together. After that the inner primary and the chaindrive could be mounted again.
Iīm using simple black oiltube as oillines. I think they look best. No bling-bling. They are lined and connected meanwhile.
After routing the oillines I could mount the front exhaust.

Somewhen earlier Iīve mentioned that Iīll rivet the rubbers to the floorboards. Iīve finished one meanwhile. Doesnīt look too bad at all! I got myself some copper-rivets and used them for the boards. DOnīt care about that they might look shitty in a while. If they start to look like shit Iīll give them a short cleaning...maybe.

Besinde that.... Iīm wainting to receive some small stuff back from the caoter. Hopefully somewhen this week before Easter...

March 27, .2007 - Rear wheel & Ratchet Top
The rear wheel and the oiltank are mounted.
While I was making the handshifter the other day I noticed quiet much slackness in the Ratchet Top. - Thought I could life with that. - Nope. Donīt wanna bother myself on every shifting about that. - The weather will hopfully get bad again... - So I removed the primary and the inner primary case and unmounted the ratchet top. Seems like thereīs a new bushing for the pawl carrier needed.

March 26, 2007 - Parts back from the Pinstriper, small electrical-stuff
Tanks and rear fender are back from the paintshop. Picked them up last friday at Steveīs place [ www.pinstriper.de ]. The parts look awsome!! Steve painted a single Scallop in copper on the gastanks and two on the fender and outlined them in pearl-white. The companyīs name on each side of the gastank and a Shovel-Head.com on the left and rear side of the oiltank. The lettering was done with the copper-color aswell. The whole stuff, exhapt the outlines, has been clearcoated.-- The outlines look somehow pixeled on the pictures...

I had to do some smaller modifications to the electrics. The place I chose for the horn-relais wasnīt too good. It touched the inside of the right gastank. The horn is placed behind the light-housing meanwhile. The housing came back from coating during last week. The welded clutch lever is back from the coater aswell and mounted already.

March 18,.2007 - Electrics ready, Suicide Clutch
The electrics stuff is mostly done. Just the horn has to be placed. Iīm waiting to receive the headlight-covers back from powdercoating to hide the horn somewhere behind them. Taillight and battery have to be connected when the fenders and tanks are back from the pinstriper.
The primary parts and clutch are mounted. The long arm on the shiftlever is not longer nesseccary for a function as suicide clutch. I cut it of and welded the short bend part of it directly to the shiftlever-axle. Looks way smoother. The part will find itīs way to the powdercoater by the begining of next week.
Else... I removed the wax-protection from the front-tires white wall, modified and lined a new throttle cable and checked some alternative bearings for the internal throttle. - Will order the original ones now. :-)

March 12, 2007 - Electrics & Frontwheel
The frontwheel is mounted. The wheel was 3mm out of the center and centered with spacers before the rebuild. I had to do some adjustments on the fendermountings and brake-mounting after I let the wheel center-spoke now.

I started with the electric-stuff. First Iīll connect everything to test its funktionality before I get it looking straight.

March 03, 2007 - Aircleaner Insert, Brakeline Part 2, Speedolight, Pinstriping
I forgot to take my camera with me to the garage...Picture will follow.
The front brakeline is ready lined up and covered with WireWrap.
To find a somehow fitting fine filter für the Goodson was hopeless. The attempt to fit a really small K&N into there didnīt worked out to good. As the K&N had a hard time and didnīt look so good after my "research" I just dissect it, removed the fleece and made a fine filter from it witch is placed on the original Goodson filter frame underneath the coarse filter. To protect the cut fleece from fray, mothers sewing machine had to pay for it. One roundabout and here we go. The fleece ainīt fire-proof so I took ordenary thread. Letīs see how it will work and how long it will last.

The original lightbulp used for lighten the speedo was mostly broken anyway, so I installed four LEDs in the back of the speedo to lighten it.

My fender was ready painted by the end of last week. So I brought the tanks and the fender to Steve from www.pinstriper.de yesterday. Steve will do some pinstipeing on the black painted parts.

February 25, 2007 - Goodson Aircleaner, Bars & front Brakeline
My Goodson Aircleaner finally arrived. Iīve mounted it directly of course. I could use the old aircleanerīs support with a few modifications. The supplied filter element is real bullshit, way to coarsely meshed. I have to find something better here. Beside this the Goodson is a real cool part!

The handlebars are back from the coater and ready wired. The wireing of all "lower" parts is done so I could mount the inner primary. Beside that I worked on the lineing of the front brakeline. To line is as low-key as possible Iīll route it through the headlight covers. Thatfor I had to modify them a little.

And else...the gastanks are back from the paintshop.

February 17, .2007 - Shocks, Swingarm & rear Brakeline
The shocks are assabled again, the swingarm got new bearings and is mounted again. To place the rear brakeline as unvisible as possible Iīve lined it between motor and the frames seatpost from the right to the left side of the bike. The brakelight switch is place behind the primary case. All visible parts of the brakeline are wraped in Küryakyn WireWarp. That stuff is made for electrical stuff but works just fine for steel braided barkelines in itīs 3/16" type if you donīt have black lines or donīt want to by some.
Beside that Iīve machined a new voltpack mounting, brought the handlebars to the powdercoater, placed some more cables and picked the oiltank from the paintshop.

Febrauary 10, 2007 - SSC Microswitches & Electrics
The big old-style switches for High Beam and Horn have had their time. SSC sells really great stainless microswitches. It wasnīt that easy to let the mounting holes of the old switches dissapear from the bars...

The cables to connect ignition, oilpressure switch, voltpack, brakelight- and neutral switch are mostly placed.

Tanks and rear fender are at the paintshop meanwhile. The fender had some cracks around the oiltank mounting that I had to take care of before.

Swingarm, Shock Covers and teh other parts are back from the powdercoater.

Two gangsters are hanging around in my garage. - My local tiredealer send them.

Feb. 05, 2007 - Tank Mountings
The new lower mounting for the right tank is welded on and modified to fit. The tanks will be rubber mounted. Thatfor I made some lager holes into the mountings. - The metalparts are ready for being painted now. Iīll bring them to the paintshop somewhen this week.

February 4, 2007 - Jockey Shifter
My Jockey Shifter is done. Iīll bring it to the powdercoater next week.
Further Iīve started to work on the electrics of the bike.
The frontwheel was centered during the last week. Now Iīm waiting for my new tire to arrive. Almost kicked me out of the shoes as I heared what the Avon Gangster will cost now...

January 28, 2007 - Clutch hub studs renewing
The old clutch hub studs were pretty worn so I build in new ones. The clutch was still working fine but while Iīm working on it anyway...
The studs are riveted at the back of the hub. Grind off the rivet heads carefully, drill a hole into the studs about 5mm deep with a 5mm drill and use a punch to get them out of the hub. Insert the new studs and rivet them on the backside of the hub again.
Small stuff that takes a lot of time...

January 21, 2007 - Frontfork assembled, LED for the Dashboard
LEDs are doing their work now in my dashboard. I simply mounted them in the old controllight rubbermountings using two additional cable bushings. Fits good and will work reliable. You can get those preconfigured LEDs ready to use on 12V at your locat bikeshop. I bought mine here: Louis

The frontfork is assembled and mounted. The new forleg bushings had to be shortned a couple of millimeters. A buddy of mine did that jb for me on his CNC machine. They were good to insert in the legs using the turend cap.

Beside that I played around with a new licenceplate mounting and a jockeyshift. Thatīs why the seat is on the pic.
By the end of last week I fetched my parts from the powdercoater. Floorboards, rearbrake master cylinder and small stuff came "Back in Black".

January 17, .2007 - Out with the bushings
The forkleg bushings of the years 80-83 are coated with teflon and not available as sparparts. Of course I picked those legs. I got a pair of special made bushings for those legs through a good contact here at the website. So, out with the old damaged ones. But how to do without the right bushing puller and without damaging the legs? Tooltime....

Take an at least 6mm strong disc of steel with a diameter of 43mm and make a 13mm slotted hole into. File just as much from two edges of the disc that it fits though the bushing when you flip it to the side. Now push the disc on a 12mm thread rod and supply two counternuts and a smaller disc on one end. Flip the disc and insert the whole rod into the forkleg. Pull the rod and the disc will find itīs place underneath the bushing. Prepare another plate of steel with a 13mm hole and place it over the thread rod on top of the leg. Iīve used a piece of old carpet to protect the leg against damages from the plate. Tighten the whole construction with a nut, place the rod or the leg in a vince and tighten the upper nut. That will pull the bushing out of the leg. - This can be found in the Techbase section later.

January 16, 2007 - Shocks disassembled
The chrome on the shock covers has to give way for pretty black aswell. I have to disassemble the shocks to get the covers off. For that I build a shock tensioner that makes it real easy to take the whole thing apart. You can buy such a tool from Progressive Suspension but in the matter of fact that I need it probably never again...?! - OK...mine looks somehow rough but it works just fine. The ring on the lower end is an old part from my primary. :-)

Januray 13, 2007 - Motor & Transmission aligned
Motor and Tranny are aligned and tightend now. Exhapt some small stuff there are is no bigger progress this weekend...

January 10, 2007 - Primary milled & Swingarm to the Coater
The primärycase is milled so I can start adjusting motor & transmisson at the weekend. Also the swingarm and the dash will be powdercoated in black now. Mighty take up to 3 weeks until the parts are back...

January 09, 2007 - Floorboards
Some small changes to my floorboards before they go to the coater. The pasted mats peel themself off quiet easily. I drilled holes around the floorboards to rivet the mats on to later. Gives them a better fix and looks like the original ones.

January 7, 2007 - Small stuff
The lower mounting of my right tank broke somewhen during the last year. I made a new mounting. Just a little more shaping before I can weld it on, somewhen next week before the tanks will be painted.

Iīll bring a few more parts to the coater tomorrow. Fuck Chrome. Had to burr the outer edges of the floorboards quiet a lot. Due to a lack of ground clearance they scratch pretty easy in sharp turns.

January 06, 2007
The small parts are back from the powdercoater. The tranny is back at its place and the motorplate can do its job again.

Iīm kicking out all the old screws and replace them with new stainless ones. That slows work down sometimes cause I just donīt have the right screws at the garage. Also Iīm using US size screws ONLY. I was sick of the US/Metric mix. A big plus on this is that I only need to take one sort of tools on trips. ...If I take tools... - Today the srews for the trannyplate arrived so I could mount it to its place again.

The oilfilterplate its back at its place aswell. I placed it right behind the tranny at the tranny plate. Looks like the filter wouldnīt survife any roadbump or boardwalk but it never touched the ground there!

My inner primarycase needs some attention. To give the chain a better alignment to the middle of the tensioner another 2mm of the seat have to be milled away. Think thatīs gonna happen somewhen next week.

December 30, 2006
All threads have been recut and the motor is back at itīs place. I started to clean all the parts.
Gonna bring some parts like Floorboardmountings, Coilmountings, Motorprotectionplate and other small stuff to the powdercoater in the beginning of next week. "A friendly black, please."

Before I put the tranny back in itīs place I open it up to check if everything is alright. - Looks good from the inside and should do itīs future work without problems.

Somehow I got the idea on jockey shift & suicide clutch...letīs see abot that later.

December 22, 2006
The frame is back from the powdercoater.
After the sandblasting a layer of zinc has been put on as a additional rust protection. I wanted the frame to be coated in shiny black. Thatfor an additional layer of clear gloss powder has been added over the silky black layer.
All bearings seats have been sealed before the coating. The threads have been coated. I didnīt wanted to plugg them cause I didnīt wanted to damage the coating while removing the pluggs/screws. - Iīll just recut the threads.

End of November 2006
Winterwork starts.
I take the bike apart completly. The frame will be powdercoated. The paint became really bad through the years and needs some attention. - Same for some other parts that need a little fresh up. I rip it all apart and throw it on a big pile. Iīll renew, clean and sort out crappy parts when I start putting it back together. - Iīm in no hurry...
